Starting a sound bath business: what I wish I knew

Thinking about starting a sound bath business? What I learned in my first two years, from renting rooms and pricing sessions to filling them every week.

Starting a sound bath business: what I wish I knew

When I left my job as cabin crew, I had no income, no plan and no idea if sound healing could ever pay my bills. I only knew it had helped me sleep again. Every morning I woke up with the same question: how can I make this work?

If you are thinking about starting a sound bath business, you probably know that question. You have done a training. You have your bowls. Maybe you have held a few sessions for friends. And you are still waiting to feel ready.

This is what I learned in my first two years, step by step. Not a formula. Just what worked, and what I would do faster if I started again.

Start before you feel ready

Most people I meet are waiting for one more course, one more teacher, one more bowl. I understand. It feels safer to keep learning than to put yourself out there.

But the day you feel completely ready never comes. I did not feel ready either. I needed the money, so I started anyway. Confidence came after I started, not before.

If you have done a training and you practise regularly, you have enough to hold a simple sound bath. Practise what you know on yourself, then on friends, until the sequence feels like yours. Then offer it to people you do not know. If you have not trained yet, a practitioner training gives you the structure to begin with.

Do not start with more instruments

When sessions are not filling, it is tempting to think the problem is your bowls. So you buy another one. It feels like progress, because you can hold it in your hands.

It rarely fixes anything. Good instruments matter, and a bowl you love will support you for years. But buy well once, learn your instruments deeply, and put the rest of your budget and energy into being seen.

Starting a sound bath business without a studio

I did not have a studio for my first two years. I rented rooms by the hour. That meant planning every session in timed blocks: set up, hold the session, pack down, leave before the next booking. It was not glamorous, but it kept my risk small.

Start there. Yoga studios, wellness centres and even hotels often rent rooms by the hour or share income with you. You learn what people want before you sign a long lease.

Only when demand was steady did I open Attuned Studio. The rent is a big fixed cost. It became my motivation to fill the room, but I would not recommend it as a first step.

How to price your sound bath sessions

“How much should I charge?” is the question I hear most. This is how I think about it.

First, know your real costs. Room rent, travel, water, your time before and after. Divide by the number of people you can realistically expect. That is your floor. Below it, you are paying to work. In my first year I barely covered my costs and did not pay myself at all. Please do not copy that part.

Then look at what similar sessions cost where you live. Today a group sound bath at my studio is 700 THB per person. Private sessions cost more, because they include a consultation and your full attention.

And let go of the guilt. Doctors and nurses help people and they get paid. Charging for your work does not make it less healing. It makes it sustainable, so you can keep offering it.

Look legitimate from day one

My husband had an idea that was unusual for small Thai businesses at the time: build a website before we even had a studio. We used an easy platform, chose the colours, wrote the texts and took the photos ourselves. We did it bit by bit, not perfectly.

That website was our proof that we were real. Later, companies contacted me for corporate events because they found us online and we looked serious. You do not need anything fancy. A simple site with your sessions, prices, location and how to book already puts you ahead of many practitioners who only have an Instagram account.

Be visible, in your own way

At the start I went outside with my bowls and took photos on my phone. They did not look good. I was afraid of what friends and family would think, seeing me do something so different from my old life. I asked friends to like and share my posts. It felt uncomfortable. I did it anyway.

What changed things was not posting more. It was posting better: showing who I am, how my sessions feel and why I do this. You do not need to copy anyone’s look or language. Your instruments, your pace, your energy and what you combine sound with are already enough to make you different.

Show up fully, even for three people

Some of my early sessions were half empty. I still gave each one everything. People felt that, and they told their friends. Word of mouth is slow, but it is the most honest marketing there is.

Over time the demand built. Seeing it build made me want to do more, and doing more built more demand. Within one to two years my group sessions were full twice a week with 10 to 12 people, and my private sessions were booked.

It could have been faster. If I had committed sooner, instead of waiting to be certain, I would have got there earlier.

Build a sound bath business that does not burn you out

Being busy is not the same as being successful. At the start I pushed hard, got tired, stopped, and lost momentum. Many practitioners live in that loop.

What works is a system. A regular schedule people can rely on. A simple way to book. Offers that lead into each other, so someone who comes to a group sound bath knows they can book a private session or learn in a workshop. And people around you who believe in what you are building.

My goal now is simple: do less and earn more. Not by working harder, but by building something that does not need me to be on all the time. Once you are running, I wrote more about the next stage in how to grow your sound healing business.

Where to begin

Starting a sound bath business is not about knowing more. You probably know enough already. It is about deciding, starting small, pricing honestly and showing up again and again, even when the room is not full.

I started with no studio, no income and no formula. Everything I have now came from doing the work, one session at a time.

Want to start with a clear structure instead of guessing?

My practitioner training teaches you how to hold a full sound healing session with confidence, from the history of the bowls to chakra balancing and private sessions. It is for anyone who feels the call and wants a proper foundation to build on.

Questions

Do I need a certificate to start a sound bath business?

Rules differ from country to country, so check where you live. In practice, a proper training gives you structure, safety knowledge and the confidence to answer questions. Venues and clients also trust a trained practitioner more.

How much does it cost to start a sound bath business?

You can start small. With a few good bowls and a room rented by the hour, your main costs are your instruments, rent per session and a simple website. Wait with a long studio lease until your sessions fill regularly.

How much should I charge for a sound bath?

Start from your real costs per session, then compare with similar sessions in your area. At my studio in Bangkok a group sound bath is 700 THB per person. Never price below your costs, even at the start.

How long does it take for a sound bath business to make money?

For me it took one to two years to go from nothing to full group sessions and a permanent studio. It depends on how consistently you show up. I believe it could have been faster if I had committed sooner.

Can I start a sound bath business without a studio?

Yes. I ran my sessions in rented rooms for about two years before I opened my own studio. Yoga studios, wellness centres and hotels are good places to start.
